Navigating Towards a Greener Future: Lake Manapōuri’s Electric Hydrofoil Ferry
Lake Manapōuri, nestled in the heart of New Zealand’s stunning landscape, is set to embrace a new era of sustainable transport. Meridian Energy, a leader in renewable energy solutions, is spearheading this transformation by introducing the world’s first electric hydrofoil ferry, the Candela P-12, to this iconic lake.
Crafting The Future
Crafted in Sweden by Candela, the world’s leading innovator in sustainable maritime technology, the electric hydrofoil ferry marks a significant advancement in eco-friendly commuting. Designed to serve the staff and contractors of the Manapōuri Power Station, New Zealand’s largest hydroelectric facility, the Candela P-12 promises to revolutionize daily transport operations while significantly reducing carbon emissions. In fact, it’s estimated to save an incredible 240 tons of carbon emissions annually.
Tania Palmer, Meridian’s general manager of Generation, emphasizes the company’s commitment to environmental protection. By investing in innovative technologies like the Candela P-12, Meridian aims to halve its emissions by 2030. Palmer underscores the ferry’s suitability for Lake Manapōuri’s pristine environment, ensuring a sustainable solution for generations to come.
“We have to be bold and innovative to reduce emissions. This deal is the result of a global search to identify the latest and best technology for our needs, and one that’s suitable for such an incredible natural environment,” Palmer says. “The Candela P-12 is an exciting replacement for the diesel ferry we currently use to transport people across the lake to the power station. It’ll drastically reduce emissions and, at the same time, give our team what’s arguably the best and most spectacular commute in the world.”

Electric Hydrofoil Ferries: A Leap Towards Eco-Friendly Maritime Transport
What sets the Candela P-12 apart from traditional boats is its cutting-edge design and unparalleled efficiency. Flying on computer-guided hydrofoils, the P-12’s hull rises above the water at high speed, reducing energy consumption by a staggering 80 percent, all while achieving remarkable speeds and range using battery power alone. The result? A smoother, quieter journey that minimizes disruption to Lake Manapōuri’s UNESCO World Heritage Area.
The electric hydrofoil ferry can hold up to 30 seated passengers who can look forward to a comfortable voyage. Thanks to a sophisticated Flight Controller system, the ferry maintains stability in real time, ensuring a gentle ride over the waves. This innovative technology, combined with minimal wake generation, sets a new standard for eco-friendly commuting.
Record-Breaking Top Speed
The Candela P-12’s record-breaking 30-knot top speed, range of 50 nautical miles at 25 knots, and high efficiency promise to revolutionize waterborne travel, setting a precedent for a cleaner, greener future. “We’re excited to partner with a global leader in the transition to sustainable energy and global decarbonization and thrilled to soon see our P-12 in action on Lake Manapōuri,” says Gustav Hasselskog, CEO of Candela.
The Candela P-12 will make its debut on Lake Manapōuri in 2025, offering boaters a glimpse into the future of eco-friendly commuting. With its unparalleled performance and environmental benefits, this electric hydrofoil ferry is not just a game-changer, it’s a beacon of hope for sustainable transport worldwide.
